Watts Towers Field Trip!

So amazing! One thing I didn't know that I learned on the tour is that they were created to look like a ship... the ship that Simon Rodia took from Italy when emigrating to the US. In person, you can definitely see the similarity, the outer walls are shaped like a ship and the towers form the masts and rigging all in a row in the center. It took him 33 years. I can't believe I'd never seen it in person before, considering it's only about a half hour away from me!

Wow. What did he make this out of?

it's amazing how many treasures are right at our fingertips and yet we never see. Good for you. :)

He made them with rebar & steel piping wrapped with wire and covered in cement, and he had to climb the towers everyday to build them taller! Then he added the mosaic on top with found materials and his neighbors gave him broken ceramics and things like that.

Apparently they're so strong that when they were testing the safety by pulling on the structure with a crane, it broke the crane's cable. Just amazing.

So true about those hidden gems! I may never see them all, but it's certainly been fun trying :)
